Livonia-based TRW Automotive this week unveiled a folding steering wheel that can retract into the dashboard.
TRW, which has facilities located throughout the world, including several Michigan facilities in Saginaw, Fowlerville, Farmington Hills, and Sterling Heights, said the design is geared toward improving driver accessibility and interior styling for smaller cars.
The foldable steering wheel concept is an example of technology that allows easier access for elderly people and those faced with mobility challenges, TRW said in a release.
The auto supplier said the technology could be introduced to the market within the next five years.
TRW as a whole supplies braking, steering and suspension, airbags, seatbelts, and steering wheels to more than 40 vehicle manufacturers
